The Silk Scarf

Setting

The setting of the story is the shopping centre called the Oriental Plaza in Johannesburg.

Main Character

Mrs Nebo, the wife of a significant figure of the African Front,is the protagonist of the story. She was of an average height and smooth-skinned in complexion.Mrs Nebo was indeed very fussy in wearing clothes that were expensive and of design as well as jewellery. She lived in one of the big houses in the white suburb of Houghton which had a large swimming pool.Mrs Nebo didn't really care if something she needed was very expensive. In other words, she was very rich and she would buy whatever she needed.

Mr Sakur, the shopkeeper, is the antagonist in this story. He was a muslim and never drank alcohol.Besides,he was one of a kind who dealt strictly according to his rules. Also, he didn't mind or fear people with high status like Mrs Nebo who was in this case the wife of an imperative politician. What valued to him most was that  as long as people who had cash bought in his shop.He never accepted a cheque from anyone no matter the circumstances and there is absolutely nothing one could do to change his mind.

Plot

Two women, being driven in a Mercedes Benz, went for a shopping voyage to a shopping centre(Oriental Plaza).Mrs Nebo was with her friend Margaret as they entered the shopping centre, both wearing luxurious clothes and jewellery. After buying a dress,Mrs Nebo was in need  of a silk scarf that would match her dress. She couldn't find the scarf that she needed at first. After some time, she and her friend together with the two bodyguards came to a shop called Moghul Boutique. That is where Mrs Nebo was shown a silk scarf that she needed and decided that she should buy it.After realising  that she didn't have enough cash for the silk scarf, she suggested to buy it with a cheque. However, the shopkeeper,Mr Sakur, denied to take the cheque saying he only accepts cash. For that reason,Mrs Nebo felt humiliated and told the shopkeeper to take the cheque because her cheque was never rejected before. The shopkeeper wouldn't break his rules by accepting the cheque,so he stuck to what he said. There fore, the tension of the argument rose as no one could convince the other. The other shopkeepers heard the dispute,so they came to see what was going on.After the shopkeepers knew that Mrs Nebo was the wife of an important politician and yet Mr Sakur couldn't concur with the idea of accepting the cheque, they decided to buy it for her. This made Mrs Nebo happy and showed gratitude towards them.As for Mr Sakur,he was told  that there won't be a place for people like him  as soon as the new democratic South Africa took over.
